Thank you to whoever sent the link to the review of Cabell's published in Scholarly Kitchen https://scholarlykitchen.sspnet.org/2017/07/25/cabells-new-predatory-journal-blacklist-review/
It was helpful and interesting and led me to contact Cabell's for a quote.
Unfortunately the quote was astonishingly high and we decided not to pursue Cabell's at this time. I think it being a new product (2017) they need to work on their pricing models in addition to the suggested improvements Rick Anderson mentioned in his review.
So what are we going to do?
Well, Beall's list is https://beallslist.weebly.com/ is being maintained and updated. It is anonymous. I'm not a big fan of the anonymous part but I understand their concerns given the potential legal issues. So while it is still available to consult, I'm not sure how much we will actively show people it.
Why not Beall's for us?
We are a bit different. Currently our institution is moving away from the maintaining a database of everything our authors publish. We had been collecting the citations of everything our authors wrote since 1994. We stopped doing that. Our administration is longer interested in how MUCH you have published. Our institution is now only interested in the IMPACT of what you have published. They want to know if what you wrote was ground breaking, important, used by others, etc. So now the institution is only interested in knowing about the number of articles you have written that have been cited and how many times they have been cited. We have stopped collecting citations from PubMed. We only collect citations from Web of Science, because journals in Web of Science all have an impact factor and the number of times it has been cited. PubMed only tells you if an article has been cited by a PubMed Central article (much different).
Given our administration's desire to know about the impact our authors are making. We are going to be directing our authors to select journals indexed by WoS to publish in. If it is in WoS it is very unlikely it is a predatory journal. Thus the need for Beall's or Cabell's is reduced a bit. It doesn't quite address the issue of solicitations to be editors, speakers, etc. For that we might suggest they do (or we can do it) some digging into the publisher/company prior to agreeing to anything.
