This issue came up at a conference re online publishing I went to this
fall. There is discussion re running all front and back matter from the
hard copy in the online version, which is how this issue arose. The
hitch with running print ads online is that most journals, as do we,
charge separately for the two versions. Most advertisers have specific
preferences re where they want their ads placed. Some prefer print,
even though, in our case, the online version has by far a larger
audience. Others want only online. Some want both. It's a bit of a
quandry.

Subject: advertising in online journals
At almost every focus group we have done with librarians they tell us
they want all content included in the print journal available online,
including the ads, as they feel that everything that's part of the print
journal should be part of the historical record. Still, we don't know
of anyone who is doing this (yet). Do any of you know if any journal is
now including the ads appearing in the print edition in the online
edition?
