Dear Medlibbers,
I've updated the checklist I sent to the list last week with inputs from
several colleagues. To keep the list short (or not too long) I didn't
include links to websites of specific journals since you'll surely get to
them through the other sites listed. The list is intended to find articles
published in scientific journas, so I didn't include links to bulletins,
trade publications, and the like.
You'll find the updated cheklist below my signature in plain text. Hope
you'll find it useful for your daily work.
Regards,
Doris Samojluk

CHECKLIST FOR FINDING FREE FULL TEXT MEDICAL ARTICLES
**********************************************************
Use the "Free Full Text" filter or limiter in your PubMed search. This will
recover free full text links to web accessible articles, including -but not
restricted to- what is available through PubMed Central.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------
Check local holdings, including online databases the library has access to.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------
Search in Google Advanced Search (I've got better results than Google
Scholar for this purpose. At the Exact Phrase box, type several words of the
title in exact order).
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------
Also check:
http://www.freemedicaljournals.com - International coverage, several
languages
http://www.bioline.org.br - Non US journals
http://www.medscape.com - Registration required (free)
http://www.scielo.org - Articles by Latin American authors in Spanish and
Portuguese
http://www.aib.it/aib/commiss/cnur/peb/peb.htm3 - List of links compiled by
the Associazione Italiana Biblioteche (Association of Italian Libraries).
Look for titles with a grey arrow and the indication (Ft) after the title.
http://www.coreynahman.com/pharmacyjournals.html - Pharmacy journals
http://www.emedicine.com/rc/index.htm - I couldn't check this link
(apparently due to technical problems from here).
Specific Publishers:
http://highwire.stanford.edu/lists/freeart.dtl
http://www.oxfordjournals.org
http://www.biomedcentral.com - Open access journals
http://www.plos.org/journals/index.html - Open access journals
Optional - General in scope, not specialized in medicine
(Optional - Most of the journals will be found at the sources list above,
but just in case you are desperate and want to try every possible resource).
http://www.doaj.org
http://www.freefulltext.com/J.htm
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------
Check the journal's webpage even though it may not be a free-access journal,
because sometimes they have free issues for promotional purposes (more than
once I found the article I was looking for in the only free issue
available!)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------
Find the author's email address and just ask for the article. Most of the
time the email address is listed in the PubMed Abstract Display along with
the author's affiliation. If the email address is not listed try the
affiliated institution webpage.
