When I was in my previous job, one of the library users sent me a lovely
cartoon postcard that said "Return books - they're not like homing
Unfortunately I don't think I still have it.
Re. the pens, pencils etc., I have a big mug on the windowsill in my
workroom labelled PLEASE HELP YOURSELF. It contains assorted writing
implements from a variety of sources. We allow anyone who wants to walk
off with a pen to do so. Therefore we seldom lose any, and frequently
gain other people's spares. It presently contains one black biro, one
pencil, two black fine-point markers and a blue felt-tip which was added
to it yesterday by one of the nurse managers. We last bought pens &
pencils from Stores in 1993.

"just consider this your version of chasing a mechanical mouse, only
this time the gods are pushing the buttons. there's really nothing
much we can do, except get through it. consider disneyland a reward
for the struggle." [ldb 1996]
