Subject: Message to the Health Sciences Librarians

NLM has received directly and indirectly a number of
expressions of concern from the health sciences library
community about the future of MEDLARS searching on the
NLM system. The Library is committed to providing both
high quality databases covering the world's biomedical
literature and a powerful, accurate search system for the use
of expert searchers.

Since our June announcement of free Web based
MEDLINE searching, staff have been working on improving
the search capabilities and system stability of IGM and
PubMed. You will be interested to know a new version of
PubMed with many of the search features that librarians
have recommended will be available shortly. Health
sciences librarians are encouraged to try the new system
and provide their comments to the RMLs or to NLM directly.
Although ELHILL must be replaced over time, it will not
happen in the next few months. NLM is committed to having
an acceptable command language replacement and a
mechanism for searching the other important MEDLARS
databases before ELHILL is no longer available.

Your constructive feedback on important performance and
functional requirements is essential. Please send your
comments to [log in to unmask] In addition, NLM will
be working with the RMLs and MLA to arrange a small
meeting to obtain additional input.

Hello Medlibbers!

Could someone forward me a copy of the e-mail from Dr. Lindberg
regarding ELHILL? I need it for
a newsletter that I am editing.

Thanks.
