Responsibilities
Major Duties and Responsibilities

I. Library Program Development, Implementation, and Administration

The incumbent is knowledgeable & skilled in all areas of library science and is delegated the primary professional responsibility to plan, develop, implement, evaluate and revise the library program for this medical center.

-Recommends and establishes the scope & extent of programs & services to be offered.

-Develops & maintains knowledge-based systems & services relevant to the organization's needs. Manages online knowledge-based resources.

-Designs & organizes a distinct library website &/or SharePoint site to ensure access to all knowledge-based information resources purchased at the facility, VISN, & national level.

-Reviews, evaluates & recommends information products & publications.

-Negotiates & interprets licenses.

-Pursues outreach efforts to market & fully exploit the benefits of library tools & resources for information seekers, trainers, & project leaders. Meets with teams & committees to present information about library resources & services & how they can be used most effectively.

-Troubleshoots electronic resource access problems as needed. Coordinates & conducts tracking efforts & informs patrons & staff of ongoing electronic resource issues.

-Establishes, implements & reviews program guidelines, policies, & operating procedures.

-Develops, recommends, & monitors program budget, in conjunction with the service Business Manager.

2. Clinical Program Support

Develops & maintains a robust clinical librarianship program. Functions as a resource to clinicians by searching medical databases to identify & retrieve knowledge-based information to resolve questions & controversies in diagnosis & treatment, clarify clinical decisions, decide upon the best course of care, & elucidate rare medical conditions. Uses knowledge of evidence-based practice and resources to provide highly-specific, case-related medical literature which contributes to quality patient care as well as quality clinical education for medical students, residents, & clinical staff.

Develops effective & efficient instruction interventions (one on one, small group, webinars, etc.) with emphasis on developing user-centered strategies for educating clinical staff in the use of numerous health-related databases including.

Serves as the expert in searching highly specialized biomedical, nursing & allied health & health management, databases & the Internet. Carries out complex searches providing accurate and reliable information that informs clinical and management decisions, provides context for research efforts and encourages the self-directed learning of staff. Applies expertise to searching multiple health-related databases. Incumbent applies in-depth knowledge of the terminology & practices of health care disciplines, including all fields of medicine & surgery, dentistry, nursing, mental health, health administration, pharmacy & allied health fields, to accurately interpret questions & complete reliable & comprehensive searches.

Develops & implements corrective measures & new procedures to improve &/or expand services.

Ensures compliance with copyright legislation & license agreements.

Keeps abreast of new developments in the library profession by reading the library literature, communicating with fellow librarians, and participating in National Network of Libraries of Medicine and Medical Library Association classes and applies new innovations to the local situation.

Ensures the development of a comprehensive, high quality library collection (monographs, journals, audiovisuals, etc.) that is broad in scope and penetrating in coverage to meet the information needs of staff, students, researchers, and patients.

Work schedule: Monday Thru Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm.
