Some of you who have posted since Sunday may have received automatic
responses from personages such as Vice-President Al Gore, First Lady
Hillary Clinton.
Between Sunday afternoon and this morning, an internet prankster has been
subscribing these two individuals (along with Newt Gingrich and a host of
bogus names) to *thousands* of electronic mailing lists. Fortunately the
administrators at CUNY and at LSoft (the company that leases Listserv)
are able to quickly detect these subscriptions and delete them. But with
a frequently-posted list like OPERA-L, some messages do get through to
the White House.
For all of you there's nothing to worry about, and you can ignore such
automatic responses. This incident does bring to mind the increasing
difficulties of trusting users on the internet. If such bogus
subscriptions turn out to be a pattern, many listowners will probably
have to review each subscriber. More work.
