We've done just that for several years now. Until last year we started
7'th grade with Bits & PiecesII and Covering and Surrounding. These are
two HUGE units. As a result we were lucky to do one "eighth grade" unit at
the end of the eighth grade year. It is almost unavoidable if your sixth
grades aren't fully implemented.

The downside is that you need those eighth grade units to align with the
GE's. This year our seventh graders came in having done Covering and
Surrounding and part of B&PII. Maybe by the time they graduate they will
actually get to see the "eighth grade" books.

I don't know if it is still the case but back in 2001 when I attended a
CMP conference in Michigan we discovered that virtually no schools were
able to complete the entire CMP program in three years. From what I've
seen it seems that the authors are addressing that. The new edition is
considerably pared down.
