Natural Community Mapping
August 5, 2006
Hanover, NH

Forests have long been mapped according to tree species.  Natural
community mapping looks at both soils and plant species to create maps
based on more complex and integrated ecological interactions.  During
this workshop, learn the art and science of natural community mapping,
how to interpret aerial infrared photos, soil surveys, wetlands maps,
and other data to develop a rough natural community map with ecologist/
botanist Brett Engstrom and forester Jeff Smith.  Then head into the
field to see how to field check the map.

Directions to Huntington Hill Farm Wildlife Habitat Management Area
From I-91:  Take Exit 13, the Hanover/Norwich exit.  Go east to Hanover,
NH.  In approxi- mately 1.0 mile, take a left onto College Street (which
becomes Rt. 10 North).  Take Route 10 north for 6.0 miles to the north
end of Hanover.  Turn east, away from the Connecticut River onto
Goodfellow Road.  Drive 0.8 miles on Goodfellow Road to the top of the
hill where the road flattens and there's a white farmhouse and barn on
the right.  Park by the barn.
