I don't have any problem with spam at all on muninet, or in my work email at
all for that matter.  As Peter indicated, there should be no spammers
registered to use the muninet.  The spam in your email inbox is coming
directly from somewhere else is my best guess.  Especially for those in
public office, your email addy is public record pretty much, and prime
target for spammers.  There are some computer programs whose sole cyberbot
job is to scan the internet for email addys.  Those addys are then compiled
into lists and sold to spammers.

 

Depending on your type of email program, one could eliminate spam by two
ways.  The first way would be to allow only senders who are presently in
your email addy book to send you mail.  The second way would be to block
those emails originating from certain email or ISP addy's.  

 

Check your email program for "tools"  and "options" and if you don't see
anything there you could check under "help" in the toolbar up at the top.
If you have a network, you could check with the network administrator to see
if there is a spam filter on the network that could be activated or level of
security increased.

Peter: there seem to be different kinds of SPAM.  We get several notices
from software developers, which are OK -- we even from time to time respond.
We also get notices for "bargain" software, for Viagra, for Rolex watches.
Is there some way like what several web services use, to create a
"favorites" list so that messages from sources we do not bookmark would be
rejected?  In this case it may be very complex.  Bruce

Your friendly MUNINET listserv administrator here. 

I noticed several messages recently regarding unwanted SPAM (is there such a
thing as "wanted" spam?).  It is a real headache for us all.

We really shouldn't be getting any spam messages on this list, not because
there is some sophisticated spam filter, but because people must subscribe
to the list before they can send messages to the list members.  Spammers
can't/don't sign up.  It's not generally worth their time.  If anyone signs
up who shouldn't, I will just delete and block them from joining.

Thanks to everyone who participates in this list.  It is still one of the
longest running most well used lists in the state.  It is successful because
YOU use it.

Keep up the great work.
