Livestock Workshop to Help Beginning Farmers Learn about Water, Wire and 
Wellness

Huntington – A day-long workshop planned for August 13, 2008 in 
Huntington, Vermont will help farmers new to livestock farming learn 
more about fencing and watering systems, as well as strategies for 
maintaining healthy animals.
“Water, Wire and Wellness” will be held at Maple Wind Farm, a 
pasture-based farm producing beef, lamb, pork and poultry, as well as 
vegetables, flowers, herbs, and maple products.
The workshop will start with an overview of the farm given by Maple Wind 
Farm owner Bruce Hennessey. The following topics will be addressed: 
fencing systems, including principals of grazing systems, and different 
fencing needs for beef, sheep, pork, and poultry; water systems 
including a visit to Maple Wind’s newly re-developed spring with 
gravity-fed surface lines; and methods to promote livestock health and 
prevent illness with UVM Extension Livestock Specialist and farmer Sam 
Comstock. The day will include discussion of resources to support 
beginning farmers and time for questions and answers.

The workshop will run on August 13 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with on-site 
check-in starting at 8:45 a.m. It will be held rain or shine; 
participants are asked to dress accordingly. Participants should bring 
their own lunch; the workshop fee will cover materials, drinks and desserts.

Pre-registration is strongly encouraged because space is limited to 50; 
registrations will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. The 
fee is $25 per person and is due by August 4; after that date, the fee
