As agreed upon in class, optional quiz 4b will run from 10:20-10:45 with
a little leeway for after class (but remember, Mary Watzin's NR205
class comes in at 11:00). The quiz will cover questions as listed on
the WEB.... three questions to be precise. Sophia will try to grade this
week's quiz 4a by Tuesday AM... but you may not know your quiz 4a
result before class starts on Tuesday.
Be prepared to work on the NEP, NPP question in class on Tuesday.
This requires nothing more than thinking about what we talked about
in class. Use the GPP, NPP discussion as a way of thinking. Also think
about how you yourself have grown in the last 20 years. The
homework for Tuesday is focused on life tables as a way of understanding
population data. Just skim the chapters (17 and 18) to get a sense of
the major ways populations can be described, and then focus in on
the life table as one way. The author describes static, dynamic, and
composite life tables. Is one better than another? Why are there
three different types of life tables? Is this another one of those
"there aren't any right solutions" issues?
If you take your data, real or imagined, (on socks, books, CD's, etc.) and
put it into a life table, will it be a static or a dynamic one?
