Fit Kids Applied Research, listed as PSYS: 268, is a 3-credit service learning course offered by Dr. Hoza through the Psychological Science department that involves learning about physical activity and development in young children, and going into local preschools to implement a physical activity program.
* As a service learning course, there is 1 hour of lecture per week involving relevant course readings and group discussion, with the remaining 6 hours a week spent at local preschool sites implementing the physical activity program and interacting with children in their classrooms. If you would like an opportunity to get involved with an applied research project in a school setting and gain additional experience working with preschoolers, this class is a great opportunity!
* The course is also an essential part of the Physical Activity Promotion in Children and Youth certificate program, in collaboration with the Early Childhood Education and Exercise Science departments if this is an area of interest to you.
New this Fall, students may also apply to participate in an Independent Study Course through Dr. Hoza's lab in the Psychological Science Department. In this course, students will primarily focus on gaining extensive hands-on experience working with young children in school settings. Students do not run the physical activity program as part of this course, but instead will focus on gaining perspectives, knowledge, and skills to work effectively with children. During a weekly lecture period, students will learn about the general research process of the Hoza lab and students may also be provided with opportunities to assist with research related tasks throughout the semester.
There is an application and interview process to take part in these courses. For more information, or to receive the online application link, contact Allie Krasner at [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>.
