My school uses a paid tool called Reach.
It has a built in texting service that is tracked in the tool.
Multiplatform.
We also use it to check students in and out from the library, the gym, and
other places where they might have access outside of academic hours between
sports practices, like the weight room, the music rooms, library, computer
lab...etc.

The chat service is pretty solid.

google chat should also do the trick I  think.
