At proctor I have decided to put StarOffice on all the computers as an
option, and give out Oo cds like candy to all the students. The
suggestion to move away from MS has been resistant at the High School and
More accepted at the Elementary School. The best argument by teachers
is a lack of Textbooks and Training material, compared to MS.
Tip: StarOffice is free to educational institutions, and the only
difference between So and Oo is that So has some templates and stuff that
cannot be sold under the open agreement.
Our SU is also looking to move to the Zimbra email system (there is an
opensource version, or the paid version can do Archiving). We are going
to implement either Moodle or Atutor. Lastly at the elementary school I
am going to be running a mixed environment of Edubuntu and Windows. If I
can get Edubuntu to kick off, the thin client stuff built in will mean a
whole lot of savings for the school.
