Friends:
I'm somewhat at a loss to understand the flurry of "resignations" from
the Science for the People discussion list triggered by what seems to me Sam
Anderson's innocuous posting last Sunday, Oct 29 of the New York Times
obituary for Dirk Struik. One of the contributing factors might be that the
way the list is set up, if there's a disagreement between two of us, it is
often aired publicly, probably because only Steve Cavrak and I have ready
access to the entire mailing address list. By rights, each of us ought to be
able to communicate privately with another member of the list. I know my own
reaction to being publicly chided as irresponsible by a posting calling me
to task because I did not "respect" Prof. Sponsel's desire to keep
confidential a letter on anthropological research on the Yanomami of Peru. I
felt defensive, and intended to respond, although I have not yet done so.
And now my critic signed off the list in what appears to have been a mood of
pique over the Struik exchange.
At any rate, I was curious to see whether the Science for the People
discussion list was indeed "imploding" and checked it yesterday evening. I
was glad to see that we're still mostly together, with over one hundred
members, though of course I regret losing those who signed off. I don't
think we've ever been at much over 110. Here's the report. Probably Steve or
I ought to post updates periodically to make one-on-one communication
easier.
