Hey Seedlings,
Here is the lesson plan from this week's meeting:
VSTEP: Vermont Students Towards Environmental Protection
Claire Wiggin and Kaylyn Blair
Plastic Lesson Plan for SEEDS: Present this to classes between April 1-12
Intro to plastic:
1. Bring in plastic items and do not tell them that they are plastic (plastic bag, water bottle, toy, food wrapper).
a. What do they all have in common? Try to get students to realize that all of these items are plastic.
b. Who here uses plastic? Are you wearing any plastic? (ex: watches, earrings, etc.)
c. Count the amount of plastic items that you use per day?
d. Use a white board/chalk board/large pad of paper to make a list.
e. STRESS that plastic is everywhere!
Activities:
2. Have all students draw their favorite place outside.
a. Share that place with the rest of the group if they feel comfortable.
b. Ask students what it would mean to have this place filled with litter (depending on the age group).
3. Read book on plastic. “Bag in the Wind” by Ted Kooser and Barry Root.
a. Have students talk about book.
4. PLASTIC TAG!
a. Have one child run around with an item of plastic. They are “the bad guy”.
b. Bring in a reusable bag and lay that on the floor. That is the safety spot and a kid can stand there for 5 seconds for a break during the game. The reusable bag is a “safe zone” for the kids. Stresses the positivity of reusable bags.
Advertise:
5. Hand out flyer for film screening of the movie “Bag It”, which will be shown for UVM community the week of April 15th. Invite families!
a. Raffle: win a reusable bag or water bottle!!! Make the tickets out of reusable paper!
Thanks again Kaylyn and Claire for this awesome lesson! I believe Fletcher Free has this book so I will try to get it this weekend. If I am able to get it, I will let send you all another email with how you can get your hands on it! Also, don't forget to send Katie or I an email when you have talked to your coordinator and have a date set that you will be headed to your school. Have a great weekend, happy St. Patty's Day, and thanks so much to those of you who made it to the meeting!
Lalaluv,
Katie & Taylor
