Hi folks, I received this information about the COOL conference a few
days ago. The conference deals with so many different issues it could
easily be applies to the many clubs and organizations at UVM.

I attended this conference my sophomore year and was able to bring back
many useful ideas - ideas which have taken form. If anyone out there is
interested in attending the conference maybe we could figure out some
type of group transportation. It's best to register before January
(cheaper) so think about it now!!!!

"WHAT IF?: TRANSFORMING OUR COMMUNITIES TOGETHER"
1996 COOL NATIONAL CONFERENCE ON STUDENT COMMUNITY SERVICE

Hosted by:
The George Washington University
Washington, DC
March 21-24, 1996

Since 1984, the Campus Outreach Opportunity League(COOL) has lead the way in
inspiring and training students in service. In these twelve years, COOL has
been the springboard countless youth organizations and powerful leaders into
the service field, both on and off the college campuses.
This year COOL national conference on Community Service, makes its way
to the urban campus of the George Washington(GW) in our nation's capital,
Washington D.C. Join us for three and a half intense days of asking tough
questions, challenging, envisioning and designing the future.

WHO IS COOL?
COOL is a national non-profit organization that promotes and supports student
involvement in community service and social change by helping students and
strengthen campus-based community service programs. Our mission is to
strengthen our nation through community service. Founded in 1984, COOL is
run by a highly creative and energetic staff of recent college graduates and
students,

WHO COMES TO THE COOL CONFERENCE?
Students serving communities. Students addressing illiteracy, homelessness,
racism, hunger, health care, HIV/AIDS, urbane violence, drug abuse, domestic
violence, and other pressing social problems. the conference is A FORUM FOR
STUDENTS of differing political affiliations, cultural and ethnic
backgrounds, sexual orientations, physical abilities, faiths, and
socio-economic classes to come together in the challenge of creatively
creating and celebrating a new reality in out communities.

WHY DO THEY COME?
Students come to: acquire critical technical skills, discover new models for
organizing groups and programs, find new resources, teach each other, have
new conversations, challenging ideas, opinions, and biases, share hopes,
heroes, and plan or the future.

AT THIS YEARS COOL CONFERENCE YOU'LL HAVE A CHANCE TO.....
* Listen to some of the top leaders in community service nationwide,
including the Honorable marian Wright Edelman, President of the Children's
 Defense Fund.
* Visit the Capitol Hill where you will discuss current social issues with
democratic and republican legislators, tour the House and Senate buildings,
and visit your own state's representatives.
* Participate in a Community Plunge, a one day service project, giving
immediate and direct service through community projects such as painting
murals and renovating playgrounds with students from GW's Neighbors Project.
* Lead or attend many of the 150 workshops on issues and topics like
coalition building, AIDS, recruitment volunteers, community service,
advocacy, cultrue and diversity, service-learning, grant writing federal
funding and legislation, starting a service program, the environment, the
critical elements of service, literacy, the arts and social change,
homelessness, and more.
* Explore the Opportunities Fair featuring exhibits by over 70 regional,
state, national, and international organizations. The Fair is open each day
of the conference and provides an opportunity to collect information and
resources to help your campus programs and to find out about graduate
programs and job opportunities.
* Discussion Panels and Open Forums on contemporary and controversial issues
related to service in our complex society.
* Identity Groups organized by race and ethnicity, religious and spiritual
identity, gender, and sexual orientation, as well as on-campus identities
(community college, urban, rural, private, public) to discuss specific
issues, needs, and agendas.
* Attend the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum for a special
educational tour and discussion on human rights conducted by museum
educators.
* Dine at the Oxfam America Hunger Banquet, a dramatic experience in the
inequitable distribution of resources throughout the world. "Draw" a fate
determining whether you will be in the 15 percent enjoying a gourmet meal,

rice and water. It's an unusual experience which you can recreate on your own
