Dear Friends of Education and Student Aid:
NAGPS is a member of the Committee for Education Funding, a coalition
of education associations devoted to full funding of education. Below is
a CEF-organized event which is extremely important. With the current
Continuing Resolution scheduled to expire on March 15, 1996, education
programs, including many that affect higher education, are in danger of
huge cuts. $3 billion could be cut from education programs in this
Fiscal Year if Congress and the White House do not respond to our efforts.
Please take a moment to publicize the attached announcement.

NATIONAL EDUCATION CALL-IN DAY
MARCH 6, 1996
The United States Congress is poised to make unprecedented cuts of $3
billion or more to education in 1996. This devastation of the country's
national education priority is unacceptable.
Please join the entire national education community by calling your
Congressional representative and the White House.
Please set aside just 5 minutes of your time on Wednesday, March 6, 1996,
to call your US Representative and both your US Senators. You can reach
them by dialing 800-574-4AID (Congressional Switchboard) and asking to be
transferred to the appropriate office. Please also call the White House
at (202) 456-1111. In all cases, ask to speak to the assistant who
handles education.
In your calls to your elected officials, urge that they:
"Stop the Education Cuts and Secure America's Economic Future."

NAGPS further encourages you to specifically mention preserving graduate
student financial aid programs, including student loans, the interest
exemption on student loans, graduate fellowships like the Javits and
Harris programs, and to extend PERMANENTLY Section 127 of the Internal
Revenue Code so that employer-provided educational assistance is tax-free
to grad students.
Please alert us to any campus activities around this date.
