I'm back from vacation and quite interested in the whole lifter
discussion. I went out to BC (report coming, eventually) with two pair
of skis: My Elan SCX shaped replacements (can't remember the model) and
my Rossi Sommet's. The Elans had Superloops on them with the standard
lifter. The Sommet's had Chili's on 'em with no lifters.

I had logged three days on the Rossi's before taking them out with me.
Mostly I took them because they have edges. My Elans are in hurtin'
shape.

The Elans worked well for very soft snow. However, I didn't trust them
on the hardpack, especially when it got steep. I brought the Rossi's up
one day and skied some of the more gnarly chutes with them. The very
first thing I noticed was the lack of risers. Every turn I was worried
about booting out; and it happened frequently on the steeps. I would
set an edge, start the ski around, and end up on my uphill hip because
the ski was balancing on the binding and not on the edge. Drove me
nuts.

I also noticed it on the more intermediate-pitched slopes. I think this
is because I was used to throwing my elans way over on edge to carve fun
turns. I couldn't do that at all on the Rossi's (besides the fact that
they have no where near the sidecut.)

I love risers. Haven't skied with anything huge, but I've now skied a
few skis with 'em, and a few pair without 'em. I'll definitely keep
getting them put on my skis. As for where I ski - well, you've taken a
few runs with me. :)

Regards
-Ben
(recovering from 6 days at Whistler/Blackcomb and 3 powder days at MRG
in the last 10. Life is good!)
