Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Burlington VT
410 AM EST Sun Mar 1 2020
.SYNOPSIS...
Weather conditions across the North Country will be seasonably cool
and mostly dry today with a ridge building into the area. Several
chances for light precipitation will be possible throughout the next
week along with a warming trend.
&&
.NEAR TERM /THROUGH MONDAY/...
As of 410 AM EST Sunday...Will have a short period of dry and
quiet weather today with surface ridge building into the area.
Flow will become southwesterly and a gradual warming trend
begins. Flow becomes southwesterly today. Warm air advection
will help to push maximum temperatures into the 20s across the
North country, which is about 10 degrees below seasonal normals
for this first day of meteorological spring. As heights have
been increasing overnight we've lost most of the low level
moisture which was allowing for some continuing light snow
showers. Soundings show short window of drying, and sunshine is
expected by this afternoon areawide as surface ridge crests over
the region around 21z.
Overnight a weak surface trough will lift across the area ahead
of an approaching warm front which will then lift across our
area on Monday. During the overnight have mention of chance and
slight chance for light snow. Minimum temperatures tonight will
occur early as clouds and precipitation move into the area from
the west associated with surface trough. Will have single digits
below zero in the Northeast Kingdom, with low 20s in the St
Lawrence valley. Mainly teens above zero expected for the rest
of the region.
On Monday, as warm front lifts across the north country, will
have precipitation spread into the region and temperatures will
warm into the 40s areawide. Precipitation will start as snow
early Monday morning, but transition to rain on strong warm air
advection. By Monday evening precipitation will spread across
our whole area.
&&
.SHORT TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/...
As of 354 AM EST Sunday...Shortwave trough moves across eastern
Canada and the Northeast Monday night. Moisture within the southwest
flow will be moving into our area Monday night. This combined with
the increasing dynamic support from the shortwave suggests areal
coverage of precipitation should be fairly widespread across the
North Country during the first part of the night. Dynamics and
moisture move east of the area late Monday night and precipitation
should come to an end leaving us with a relatively dry day on
Tuesday. Looking at precipitation Monday night to mainly be rain
with some snow toward the end of the event with lows falling into
the upper 20s to mid 30s. Highs on Tuesday will generally be in the
40s to around 50.
&&
.LONG TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/...
As of 354 AM EST Sunday...Tuesday night and Wednesday we will be
looking at a similar scenario to the Monday night early Tuesday
event. Moisture returns to the region Tuesday night in the southwest
flow aloft that develops over the area. Another shortwave trough
will move out of the Great Lakes region and enhance dynamic support
over the Northeast and areal coverage of precipitation...rain and
snow...will become fairly widespread early Wednesday morning. As
moisture plume shifts east and flow aloft becomes more northwest
with time Wednesday afternoon precipitation will become more terrain
driven. Area stays in broad cyclonic flow on Thursday and thus
cannot rule out the possibility of some showers. Highs both
Wednesday and Thursday will generally be in the upper 30s to mid
40s. One noticeable change from the past few nights is seeing much
of the data now pointing to a stronger shortwave trough moving into
the region Thursday night into Friday. This would point toward the
development of a stronger surface low and greater likelihood of
precipitation. Areas south and east of our area would have the best
chance of seeing widespread precipitation based on this new data,
but our area would be close enough to get in on the action.
Definitely something to keep an eye on as our area would be on the
cold side of the low for potential snow accumulations. Saturday
looks like colder and drier weather with region in northwest flow
aloft.
&&
.AVIATION /09Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Through 06Z Monday...Some lingering light snow at BTV and SLK,
but otherwise variably cloudiness across the region. Ceilings
heights will be right around 3000 ft, so sometimes bouncing
between VFR and MVFR. As we head into the daytime on Sunday,
will see decreasing cloud cover and VFR conditions with light
winds.
Outlook...
Monday: Mainly VFR, with local MVFR possible. Chance SHRA, Slight
chance SHSN.
Monday Night: Mainly MVFR, with local IFR possible. Chance SHRA,
Chance SHSN.
Tuesday: Mainly VFR, with areas MVFR possible. Slight chance
SHRA.
Tuesday Night: Mainly VFR, with areas MVFR possible. Chance SHRA,
Chance SHSN.
Wednesday: Mainly MVFR, with local IFR possible. Chance SHRA.
Wednesday Night: Mainly MVFR, with areas VFR possible. Slight
chance SHSN.
Thursday: Mainly VFR, with areas MVFR possible. Chance SHRA,
Chance SHSN.
