Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Burlington VT
641 AM EDT Tue Sep 6 2022
.SYNOPSIS...
Rain and cloudy skies will be slow to depart to the south today as a
nearly stationary front remains in place over southern New England.
Conditions will slowly improve from north to south later today and
tonight as high pressure starts to build into the region. This
ridging will allow warm and dry conditions will take hold Thursday
through Saturday.
&&
.NEAR TERM /THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
As of 637 AM EDT Tuesday...No changes were needed with this
update. Thick cloud cover blankets the region this morning,
though we are starting to see the patchy fog/drizzle wane on
area webcams and surface obs. The steadiest rain lies across
eastern/southern VT, but expect it could spread a bit further
north through the morning hours as low pressure moves by well to
our south. Thereafter, gradual clearing and drying this
afternoon with high pressure starting to nose into the area. The
going forecast has this all covered, so no significant
adjustments were needed.
Previous discussion...A stationary front remains stretched
across southern New England this morning while an upper trough
pushes south across eastern Canada. Light rain continues over
central/southern portions of our forecast area, with patchy fog and
drizzle also being reported across much of the region. The latest
model runs have slowed the southward progression of the front and
the departure of low-level moisture and precipitation; the NAM is
particularly aggressive in bringing another wave of low pressure
along the front today, keeping widespread rain over much of our
region through the day today and into the overnight hours tonight.
While this is a bit on the pessimistic side, overall consensus
indicates that at least this morning will remain pretty cloudy and
rainy over much of the region, with any improvement holding off
until later this afternoon into the evening hours. However, we will
see clearing from north to south start by early this evening, and
the bulk of the rain will end by midnight. Additional rainfall
amounts will be highest along and south of a Newcomb NY to Waterbury
VT to Littleton NH line, where a quarter to three-quarters of an
inch will be possible. Locally higher amounts an inch will be
possible, particularly south of Route 4. Given the expected
lingering cloud cover, have lowered high temperatures for today a
bit; most areas will top out in the mid to upper 60s, with the St
Lawrence Valley and far northern Champlain Valley warming into the
lower 70s since they'll see more sunshine.
Ridging starts to move into northern areas later tonight into
Wednesday, leading to clearing skies and light winds. This will
allow for the development of fog, especially in the favored valley
locations. Wednesday will feature more sunshine than today,
especially northern/central areas. The slow-moving upper trough axis
will keep more cloud cover in the south, though expect even these
locations will get at least a little sun. The presence of the upper
trough will also keep a low-end threat of a shower or two in
southern areas, as well. After early morning lows in the 50s,
temperatures will warm into the 70s areawide Wednesday afternoon.
&&
.SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/...
As of 336 AM EDT Tuesday...Shortwave energy will pass overhead
Wednesday night and Thursday, but mostly dry weather is expected
during this time. Surface high pressure will be positioned across
southern Quebec, Canada while surface low pressure remains situated
off the mid-Atlantic Coast. This will result in partly cloudy skies,
light winds, low temperatures in the low to mid 50s and highs in the
mid to upper 70s. However, a slight chance of rain showers exist,
especially upslope showers on the east side of the Green Mountains
in Vermont late Thursday.
&&
.LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/...
As of 336 AM EDT Tuesday...High pressure and dry weather will remain
in control for the remainder of the week. During this time,
overnight low temperatures will be in the 50s to near 60 with
daytime highs in the upper 70s to low/mid 80s. Thereafter,
significant changes have been observed among the suite of 00z
guidance as opposed to the previous model runs. At this time, an
approaching low pressure system looks to become stalled across the
central US early next week due to a blocking high across Nova
Scotia. This would keep the Northeast dry through early next week.
Given that trends in model guidance are likely to continue
fluctuating, have stuck with the NBM forecast for now with 20-40%
PoPs early next week. Stay tuned for changes.
&&
.AVIATION /12Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Through 06Z Wednesday...Generally offering a persistence
forecast for the overnight hours and into early Tuesday with
little airmass change. This results in widespread MVFR/IFR
ceilings outside of the northern St. Lawrence Valley where KMSS
will be largely VFR with periods of MVFR. Visibility will be
reduced periodically as well in patchy drizzle and fog, with
most sites remaining 3-5 SM or better. After about 15Z Tuesday,
ceiling will begin to slowly lift through the day, trending to
a mix of MVFR/VFR by the afternoon. Winds through the period
will be less than 10kts and mainly from the NNE until late
Tuesday where a shift to the south at KPBG and KBTV is expected.
Outlook...
Wednesday: VFR. NO SIG WX.
Wednesday Night: Mainly VFR, with local MVFR possible. NO SIG WX.
Thursday: Mainly VFR, with local MVFR possible. NO SIG WX.
Thursday Night: VFR. NO SIG WX.
Friday: VFR. NO SIG WX.
Friday Night: VFR. NO SIG WX.
Saturday: VFR. NO SIG WX.
