Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Burlington VT
425 AM EST Fri Dec 29 2017
.SYNOPSIS...
Below normal temperatures...on the order of 20 to 25 degrees
below normal...will continue through this weekend and into much
of next week. Winds will not be as strong as the past couple of
days and as a result wind chills will not be a concern.
However...there will be two periods of gusty northwest winds and
very cold temperatures... this Sunday and Monday and again for
the middle part of next week... that will result in wind chill
issues.
&&
.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SATURDAY/...
As of 425 AM EST Friday...Wind chill warnings and advisories
have been cancelled as winds are generally under 5 mph. It still
remains very cold...but wind not a factor anymore.
Otherwise...shortwave trough coming out of the eastern Great
Lakes will enhance dynamic support over parts of the area today.
Moisture should become sufficiently deep over the northern half
of Vermont later this morning and especially this afternoon and
evening for the development of some light snow. Most favorable
location will be over the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont. High
temperatures today will generally be in the single digits above
zero...which is a few degrees warmer than yesterday.
Any light snow over northeast Vermont this evening will come to
an end and skies will start to clear out. With cold air mass
still over the region overnight lows will be from 5 below to 15
below with some mountain locations pushing 20 below. On
Saturday...clouds will be increasing across the area as upper
low moves into the region. The threat for light snow and snow
showers will exist...especially in the afternoon. Saturday looks
to be the warmest day of the coming days with highs in the 5 to
15 above range.
&&
.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/...
As of 425 AM EST Friday...Upper level shortwave continues to
move through the region Saturday night, bringing with it minimal
precipitation, mostly across the southern counties. Overall,
look for amounts of an inch or less across the CWA. As the
shortwave departs, the next round of arctic air moves in during
the day Sunday, leading to another day of temperatures
struggling to get back to zero across most of the area.
&&
.LONG TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/...
As of 425 AM EST Friday...The long term will offer no lasting
relief from the bitter cold with New Year's Eve and Day bringing
another round of temperatures 25 to almost 30 degrees below
seasonal normals. Brisk northwesterly winds through this
timeframe will likely lead to another period of wind chill
advisories/warnings across the CWA. Those looking to venture
outdoors for New Years Eve/New Years activities should be
prepared for bitter cold and plan in advance to wear many layers
and take precautions against frostbite.
Tuesday will see a brief pattern change as a strengthening shortwave
will dig through the central US into the southeastern US, bringing
some warmer southwesterly air into the northeast. This will bring
daytime highs into the double digits through the midweek with some
valley locations pushing near 20 degrees. Compared to the prior
week, this will feel like a heat wave.
The shortwave swings through the region Thursday and looks to bring
some widespread snow showers, though models still don't have a firm
grasp on how exactly the system will play out at this time. Though,
things look to take yet another plunge in as another shot of arctic
air looks to move in at the very end of the period.
&&
.AVIATION /09Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Through 06Z Saturday...VFR conditions expected through the
period with the exception of possible MVFR conditions at KBTV
through 12z as clouds from Lake Champlain move toward the area.
Otherwise expecting increasing mid and high level clouds as the
day wears on...but ceilings will remain above 5000 feet. Winds
will generally be under 10 knots through the period.
Outlook...
Saturday: VFR. Slight chance SHSN.
Saturday Night: Mainly VFR, with local MVFR possible. Chance
SHSN.
Sunday: Mainly VFR, with local MVFR possible. NO SIG WX.
Sunday Night: VFR. NO SIG WX.
New Years Day: Mainly VFR, with areas MVFR possible. NO SIG WX.
Monday Night: Mainly MVFR, with areas VFR possible. NO SIG WX.
Tuesday: Mainly MVFR, with areas VFR possible. Slight chance
SHSN.
