I know that Mad River was one of the first places to allow snowboarders.
I've heard 2 stories as to why it changed and don't know which, if either,
is true.
(A) One day a couple of teen aged rad dudes gave Betsy Pratt some foul
mouthed lip and she declared that snowboarders were no longer welcome at
her mountain.
(B) The unloading zone for the single is unsuitable for snowboarders. It
is slightly uphill and you must skate off to the side and get out of the
way quickly. Even after ~ 20 days riding spread over 3-4 years, I still
find unloading from a chair the most difficult thing. I can only go
straight and I crash about 1 out of 5 times, often taking 2 or 3 innocent
bystanders with me.
Last year I did a run down Bruce Trail at Stowe right behind a posse of
riders. Of course they rode sideways much of the time and they did more
damage to that narrow natural snow trail than 100 skiers would have done,
in my opinion. Also, in my opinion there are places uniquely well suited
to riders. I will be posting a report on the Duke Trail at Mt. Cardigan,
which I think is one of them.
