Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Burlington VT
328 AM EDT Wed Jul 21 2021
.SYNOPSIS...
Unsettled but generally benign weather will continue through the
remainder of the work week as an upper trough persists over the
region. Daily chances for light rain showers exist, but only
isolated to scattered in nature. Saturday will feature sunny skies
and warm temperatures, followed by a rainy Sunday.
&&
.NEAR TERM /THROUGH THURSDAY/...
As of 326 AM EDT Wednesday...Pre-frontal trough which brought a line
of severe storms to the forecast area has exited southeast of the
region this morning with the parent upper trough and surface cold
front lagging behind. These features will slowly traverse the area
today with scattered showers developing after the noon hour with
some weak surface instability and steepening low-level lapse rates
supporting the chance for some isolated thunder, but nothing
should turn the corner towards severe. Highs today will be quite
cool by late July standards under thick cloud cover, only
topping out in the low/mid 70s in the valleys and upper 60s
across the Adirondacks and Northeast Kingdom.
Any afternoon shower activity will wane this evening with a quiet
and cool night on tap with lows ranging through the 50s. Thursday
begins quiet, but the region remains under control of a broad
upper trough with another weak impulse of shortwave energy
approaching from the northwest in the afternoon. Best progged
instability, albeit very weak, will be located over north-
central and northeast Vermont where a chance of showers will
exist, but elsewhere the forecast is for drier conditions under
partly sunny skies. Highs will range through the 70s.
&&
.SHORT TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/...
As of 326 AM EDT Wednesday...Northwesterly flow will continue over
the forecast area for Thursday night through Friday. An upper level
shortwave within the northwesterly flow will move through the
Northeast Friday morning, providing enough lift for some scattered
rain showers. Morning timing of the disturbance will limit
instability (and coverage of showers), so have continued with PoPs
in the 20 to 40% range for Friday. In addition to limited
instability, deep moisture will also be marginal, further limiting
rain potential. So while some areas will see a brief shower, should
be an otherwise dry day. High temperatures Friday in the low to mid
70s.
&&
.LONG TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/...
As of 326 AM EDT Wednesday...A dry start to the weekend is expected
along with slightly warmer temperatures with brief ridging building
in. Precipitation chances then ramp up Saturday night through Monday
as a series of fronts move through associated with a Canadian low
pressure system. Should see several waves of showers resulting from
the frontal passages. Some embedded thunderstorms are possible,
especially during the afternoon hours, though morning cloud cover
each day should limit diurnal instability somewhat. Severe threat
will be conditional based on amount of instability able to be
realized...but progged 0-6 km shear 40+ knots would favor some more
organized storms should the other parameters line up. Still looks
rather messy however with the fronts coming through piecemeal, so
not overly concerned about any severe threat at this point...but
will continue to monitor. Once the system clears the area later on
Monday, looking at a stretch of dry weather through the middle of
the week with high pressure taking control. Temperatures will stay
within a few degrees of climatological norms (highs upper 70s/low
80s) through Wednesday.
&&
.AVIATION /08Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Through 06Z Thursday...Lowering ceilings across the board are
expected during the remainder of the overnight hours with
generally MVFR/VFR visibilities and MVFR/IFR ceilings. After
12Z conditions gradually improve to VFR by late morning into
early afternoon with scattered showers developing after noon.
Winds will be less than 10kts through the period, variable in
direction overnight becoming NNW mid-morning onward.
Outlook...
Thursday: VFR. NO SIG WX.
Thursday Night: VFR. Slight chance SHRA.
Friday: VFR. Chance SHRA, Slight chance TSRA.
Friday Night: VFR. NO SIG WX.
Saturday: VFR. NO SIG WX.
Saturday Night: VFR. Chance SHRA.
Sunday: Mainly VFR, with areas MVFR possible. Chance SHRA, Slight
chance TSRA.
