A headlamp
Even a $400 one
Can seem insignificant and weak
A toy whose shiny powers
Pale into white and grey
When shone onto the heart of a mountain
We had just left our tracks
Trenches of snow winding down the fall line
We felt strong and alive, hooting our joy into the night
When we saw the heart of the mountain
We couldn't believe a rock this big and pure
Could stand alone
In the night
for 10,000 winters
Since the Glacier tore it out
Each season the snows have come
and swirled around the heart of the mountain
But how many nights will skiers come to see it
Before they are gone
Will someone else take our place
To feel the spirit of the mountain?
