I dunno, that loopy li'l Elan SCX is still turnier than most of the '05
skis (and by quite a bit!) It's commercial launch date was way back in
1992, according to their website:
http://www.harborwatchpub.com/elan/1999-2000/about_elan/about_news_timel
ine.html
According to my math, that's going on FOURTEEN years ago (oops- just
sprouted another gray hair! :-) ) By '95-'96 most ski manufacturers were
introducing shapers as fast as they could, many of which are about as
turny as this year's crop (although there were many with longer sidecuts
too.) The trend has been incrementally turnier with most manufacturers,
but very VERY few are as loopy as an SCX of any model or vintage.
But skis today are significantly _edgier_ than they were in 1992 or '96,
even the softy intermediate skis, which sure makes it easier for us
girly-men to ski with confidence! I would suggest that maybe the stubby
stable fatties do indeed impart a lot of confidence to yer average
touron too.
