AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE BURLINGTON VT
634 AM EST WED NOV 21 2012
.SYNOPSIS...
CLOUDS WILL EXIT THE AREA THROUGH THE MORNING HOURS WITH SUNSHINE
EXPECTED THIS AFTERNOON. DRY WEATHER WILL CONTINUE WITH HIGH
TEMPERATURES A FEW DEGREES ABOVE SEASONAL NORMALS. SIMILAR
CONDITIONS WILL EXIST ON THANKSGIVING WITH A LARGE AREA OF HIGH
PRESSURE OVER THE AREA BRINGING SUN...DRY WEATHER...AND ABOVE NORMAL
TEMPERATURES. LOOK FOR SOME CHANGES THIS WEEKEND WITH CLOUDS AND
SHOWERS MOVING IN LATER ON FRIDAY AND CONTINUING INTO SATURDAY AS A
COLD FRONT MOVES ACROSS THE AREA. COOLER WEATHER IS EXPECTED ON
SUNDAY.
&&
.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 7 PM THIS EVENING/...
AS OF 630 AM EST WEDNESDAY...OVERALL FORECAST IN GOOD SHAPE AND
ONLY TWEAK WAS TO CURRENT TEMPERATURES AND DEW POINTS...GETTING
A FEW OF THEM MORE LIKE THE CURRENT CONDITIONS. OTHERWISE...SHORTWAVE
TROUGH TAKING ITS TIME MOVING EAST EARLY THIS MORNING AND SATELLITE
IMAGERY SHOWS FAIRLY THICK MID AND HIGH LEVEL CLOUDS OVER MOST OF
THE AREA. WHERE SOME CLEARING HAS TAKEN PLACE...NAMELY THE SAINT
LAWRENCE VALLEY...FOG HAS DEVELOPED AND THIS WILL LAST THROUGH
ABOUT MID- MORNING. OTHERWISE...LOOK FOR CLOUDS EXITING THE ENTIRE
AREA BY MIDDAY AND SUNSHINE IS EXPECTED THEREAFTER. HIGH TEMPERATURES
WILL BE A FEW DEGREES ABOVE SEASONAL NORMALS. PRESSURE GRADIENT
REMAINS WEAK OVER THE AREA...SO LIGHT AND VARIABLE WINDS WILL
PREVAIL.
&&
.SHORT TERM /7 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH FRIDAY/...
AS OF 311 AM EST WEDNESDAY...UPPER RIDGE BECOMES ESTABLISHED OVER
THE AREA TONIGHT AND THANKSGIVING...WHICH WILL KEEP SURFACE HIGH
PRESSURE SYSTEM IN PLACE. THUS LOOKING AT PLENTY OF SUN ON
THANKSGIVING WITH DRY WEATHER AND HIGHS IN THE MID 40S TO MID 50S.
THE DRY WEATHER CONTINUE THURSDAY NIGHT INTO FRIDAY MORNING...BUT
THEN IT LOOKS LIKE THE START OF A PATTERN CHANGE AS SOUTHWEST FLOW
ALOFT BECOMES ESTABLISHED ON FRIDAY AS AN UPPER LEVEL TROUGH OF
LOW PRESSURE MOVES OUT OF THE UPPER MIDWEST. CLOUDS WILL BE ON THE
INCREASE THROUGHOUT THE DAY AND WE SHOULD SEE SOME RAIN SHOWERS
MOVE INTO PARTS OF NORTHERN NEW YORK IN THE AFTERNOON. HAVE
CONTINUED THE IDEA OF A CHANCE OF AFTERNOON SHOWERS IN THIS AREA.
DESPITE THE CLOUDS AND SHOWERS...FRIDAY SHOULD BE THE WARMEST DAY
WITH HIGHS IN THE UPPER 40S TO MID 50S. PRESSURE GRADIENT WILL
STRENGTHEN OVER NORTHERN NEW YORK IN THE AFTERNOON ON FRIDAY AND
THE POTENTIAL WILL EXIST FOR WIND GUSTS AROUND 30 MPH.
&&
.LONG TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/...
AS OF 345 AM EST WEDNESDAY...EXTENDED PERIOD MARKED BY A PATTERN
CHANGE AWAY FROM THE PERSISTENT RIDGE OF HIGH PRESSURE WE'VE SEEN
OVER THE PAST WEEK. UPPER LOW IN THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST THIS MORNING
WILL TRAVERSE NORTHERN US AND BREAK DOWN THE NORTHEAST RIDGE. AT
THE SURFACE, A COLD FRONT WILL MOVE THROUGH THE REGION BY SATURDAY
MORNING. FOR THE REST OF THE WEEKEND INTO EARLY NEXT WEEK THE
UPPER LEVEL FLOW FLATTENS OUT TO BECOME MORE ZONAL, WITH PERIODIC
SHORT WAVE TROUGHS MOVING ACROSS THE REGION. CONSIDERABLE CLOUDS
AND OFF AND ON LOW CHANCES FOR RAIN OR SNOW SHOWERS.
FRIDAY NIGHT A COLD FRONT WILL MOVE THROUGH WITH SCATTERED SHOWERS
AHEAD OF THE FRONT. SOUTHERLY FLOW AHEAD OF THE FRONT FRIDAY
NIGHT WILL KEEP OVERNIGHT LOWS WARM UNTIL FRONTAL PASSAGE...AND
PRECIP TYPE WILL BE MOSTLY LIQUID. WINDS SHIFT AROUND TO NW BY
SATURDAY MORNING WITH RELATIVE MINIMUM IN PRECIP CHANCES BEFORE
SUNRISE. EXPECT LITTLE REBOUND TO TEMPS DURING DAY SATURDAY IN COLD
AIR ADVECTION THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT. 1000-500 MB THICKNESS DROP
TO 522 AND 850 MB TEMP AS LOW AS -12C SATURDAY NIGHT. ON SATURDAY
EXPECT PERIOD OF UPSLOPE PRECIP IN NORTH-NORTHWEST FLOW ACROSS
THE ADIRONDACKS AND NORTHERN GREEN MOUNTAINS. MAINLY SNOW OVER
HIGHER ELEVATIONS. LATER SATURDAY UPPER SHORTWAVE TROUGH PASSES
AND LOW LEVEL DRY AIR SHUTS THINGS DOWN.
BRIEF PERIOD OF 500 MB SHORT WAVE RIDGING AND ASSOCIATED SURFACE
RIDGE DURING THE DAY SUNDAY WILL ALLOW FOR SOME SUN THROUGH THE
CLOUDS.
COLDER AIR THEN RETREATS NORTH THROUGH TUESDAY WHEN ZONAL WEST TO
EAST JET STREAM SEPARATES COLD TO NORTH AND RELATIVELY WARMER AIR
TO SOUTH. FAST MOVING VORT MAX PASSES MAINLY NORTH OF THE BORDER
ON MONDAY, AND LOW CHANCE POPS IN NORTH TAPER OFF FURTHER SOUTH.
GOOD CONFIDENCE IN FORECAST THROUGH SUNDAY...THEN CONFIDENCE LOWER
HEADING INTO NEXT WEEK AS MODELS HAVE DIFFICULTY RESOLVING TIMING
OF FAST MOVING WEAK VORT MAXES.
&&
.AVIATION /12Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
THROUGH 12Z THURSDAY...VFR CEILINGS AT OR ABOVE 10 KFT WILL
DECREASE TO SCATTERED DURING THE DAY. CALM WINDS WILL TURN TO
LIGHT SOUTHERLY. MVFR VIS AT MASSENA WILL IMPROVE BY 14Z.
OUTLOOK 12Z THURSDAY THROUGH SUNDAY...
00Z THURSDAY THROUGH 18Z FRIDAY...MAINLY VFR UNDER HIGH PRESSURE.
18Z FRIDAY THROUGH 12Z SUNDAY...MAINLY VFR WITH SCATTERED MVFR IN
RAIN SHOWERS FRIDAY NIGHT...CHANGING TO SHOW SHOWERS SATURDAY.
12Z SUNDAY THROUGH 00Z MONDAY...MAINLY VFR.
&&
