Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Burlington VT
647 AM EST Sun Jan 24 2021
.SYNOPSIS...
The cold stretch with below normal temperatures will continue
through tonight, but we'll see a warming trend back towards
seasonally normal temperatures starting Monday. The remainder of
the week will feature very quiet weather as any impactful
weather systems are shunted to our south by Canadian high
pressure. Temperatures return to below normal Thursday night and
Friday.
&&
.NEAR TERM /THROUGH MONDAY/...
As of 624 AM EST Sunday...Very cold morning to wake up to with
reported wind chills between -5 and -20 F. Wind Chill Advisories
remain in effect for portions of the forecast area through 10
AM with no changes needed for this morning update. Previous
discussion follows.
Another cold and blustery day is in store for the North Country
today. Wind Chill Advisories remain in place until 10 AM for
the northern Adirondacks as well as portions of northern
Vermont, where wind chills as low as 25 below zero can be
expected this morning. For the rest of the day, high pressure
will begin to nudge in from the west, but still enough of a
pressure gradient over our area to support gusty
westerly/northwesterly winds with gusts generally 15 to 25 mph.
High temperatures will be very similar to yesterday...low to mid
teens for most of the area. Wind chills today will be below
zero for much of the area, and locally in the single digits
above zero for the valleys.
For tonight, just how cold we get remains a tricky forecast. High
pressure will continue to build in from the west, but still thinking
we retain enough gradient flow to keep temperatures somewhat in
check. In addition, will see some low clouds (currently visible
over Ontario and into Western New York) spread eastward into our
area overnight, which will also limit degree of radiational cooling.
Have forecast overnight lows in the low single digits for much of
the area tonight, and between 0 and -10 degrees F for the colder
hollows of the northern Adirondacks and Northeast Kingdom.
Monday will be dry and slightly warmer, with highs in the upper
teens to low 20s.
&&
.SHORT TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/...
As of 333 AM EST Sunday...High pressure to our north Monday night
will keep dry conditions over the area along with below normal low
temperatures. Readings should be in the single digits to lower teens
with a few spots in the northern Adirondacks and Northeast Kingdom
of Vermont falling just below zero. Most of the area should also
remain dry on Tuesday, but moisture will be increasing across our
southern areas and this could bring a little light snow to parts of
northern New York and southern Vermont. Chances still look on the
low side and thus will go with only a slight chance for these areas
late Tuesday afternoon. Highs on Tuesday will be in the 20s to
around 30.
&&
.LONG TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/...
As of 333 AM EST Sunday...Not significant weather is expected Tuesday
night through Saturday. Still looking at a slight chance of light
snow down across southern Vermont and parts of northern New York
Tuesday night, but high pressure builds back down into the region on
Wednesday and persists into Thursday. Dry weather is expected both
days, but deepening low pressure over the mid-Atlantic region on
Thursday will increase the pressure gradient over the area and we
should see more wind across the region Thursday and Friday. Will
also be keeping an eye on an upper low moving down from Canada on
Friday which could bring some snow showers to the area and a
reinforcing shot of colder air for the weekend. Starting to see some
better agreement on this scenario. Will keep Friday and Saturday dry
for now as moisture may be very limited. However, colder air aloft
moving in could set us up for a repeat of what we have experienced
this weekend and have trended a bit colder with temperatures on
Friday and Saturday.
&&
.AVIATION /12Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Through 12Z Monday...A few lingering low clouds over the area,
mainly over higher terrain, but otherwise clear skies and VFR
conditions for the majority of the TAF sites. The low clouds are
hovering around KSLK, resulting in some MVFR ceilings that are
expected to remain in the vicinity through 14Z. After 14Z,
widespread VFR forecast for the rest of the TAF period. Westerly
winds 5-15 knots will continue the end of the TAF period, with
some gusts to 20 knots possible this afternoon. There is some
low- level wind shear that will affect most terminals through
around midday as a 40-50 knot northwesterly low-level jet moves
through.
Outlook...
Monday: VFR. NO SIG WX.
Monday Night: Mainly VFR, with local MVFR possible. NO SIG WX.
Tuesday: VFR. NO SIG WX.
Tuesday Night: VFR. Slight chance SN.
Wednesday: Mainly VFR, with local MVFR possible. NO SIG WX.
Wednesday Night: Mainly VFR, with local MVFR possible. NO SIG WX.
Thursday: Mainly MVFR, with areas VFR possible. NO SIG WX.
