That certainly jives with what my bicep was tellin' me heftin' Tom
Morrison's undrilled 180cm CMH (& skiin' Jerm's 180 CMH) vs. Aaron's
_mounted_ TMEXs (both the 177s and 184s) and Patrick Haskells R:EX
w/Freefrides."
FWIW, at the Partee (aka MankFest 2004), I found myself envying those on the
10cmish-waisted skis, but other than that, I've had no regrets with my 10:EX
setup. In December's deep pow, I was simply having too much fun to worry
about whether I was getting maximum float, and those Atomics were tough
enough to plow through moderately-sized death cookies or crust that a more
traditional midfat would have choked on.
Nevertheless, when in doubt, e aho la ula. Unless you've been suffering
trying to keep up with your b/c companions or intend to use the AT rig where
longer hikes or less phlatlander-friendly altitudes could detract from your
enjoyment, I don't see a compelling reason to go with a lighter ski for the
uphill. If you would prefer a lighter AT ski, then by all means mount the
freeride on the R:EX, or better yet, get another pair of Diamirs and mount
up the R:EX with those.
Patrick
PS If for some obscure reason you feel compelled to unload the PRs with the
Freerides still attached, I know a potential customer.
