Shallow snow with cold temps is the recipe for depth hoar, not deep snow in warmer maritime climates!  It woulda' been nice to have seen you at ESAW in New Hampshire last weekend - you would have loved it.
Obviously, Denis' erroneous recipe is trivial compared to the $hit show in Paris right now.

I was there, not on that occasion but a few weeks ago, before the snows started, to scout out Elephants back's various aspects.
The rounded west side, and also the southeast side are under 30 degrees.  In the backcountry west I never venture onto above
30 degree slopes or terrain below them.  I ski the steeper stuff in resorts with avi control.  Not a guarantee of course.

Carson Pass has major avi activity every year.  I fear that our early deep snows on warm ground is setting up a bad year.  That's
a recipe for depth hoar that can sit there all winter just waiting for a trigger. I have had excellent low and moderate angle powder
Skiing in trees in Carson Pass within a mile of CA Hwy. 88.

I skied Mammoth on tues and wed. of this past week.  It was cold, silky, and deep.
