Denis Bogan <[log in to unmask]> writes in response to Peter
Baldwin's <Pete Baldwin <[log in to unmask]> questions:
>It is difficult to get a permit to enter Baxter State Park in winter.
I'm not sure it's so difficult to get the permit, rather they make you
jump through hoops to demonstrate that you're together enough that you'll
probably survive without them having to come & get you. They insist that
you be in an organized party, with the necessary equipment, and if they
don't already know you (from past years) they'll be pretty skeptical
and _inspect_ your equipment, checking it off against their required &
recommended equipment lists.
>Katahdin is considerably more remote than the Presidentials and Maine does
>not want to have to deal with a Mt. Washington like death toll or massive
>search & rescue responsibilities.
You ain't just a-whistlin' Dixie here Denis- motorized traffic is very
restricted in winter, and it's a 14 mile- potential death-march (in bad
weather) to get up to the hut. You don't need a hut reservation if you're
planning to camp out, but be aware that mid-winter there are days when the
air temps don't exceed 0F degrees- mighty chilly camping! (Go for the hut,
man, whatever the wait & cost!)
It's about remote & beautiful as it gets in New England though, well
worth the trip. I keep meaning to get back there (it's been 5+ years
now.)
