With the quadruple caveats that:
- the incident is very old news;
- the recovery is also a bit dated;
- he was a British (not U.S.) citizen; and,
- maybe Guido already posted a link to it and it was extensively debated
here;

I didn’t find much through additional googling, although this was the most
strongly worded version of how his ski partner did not join him:
“His female companion, who had refused to leave the marked slopes, raised
the alarm when he did not return to their hotel.”
Makes you wonder what that final conversation was like.  (“But honey, the
avalanche danger is high; is that safe?”  “Yeah, sure, come along, it will
be fun...”)
