Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Burlington VT
312 AM EDT Thu Apr 23 2020
.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will build across the area today with mainly
sunny skies, lighter winds and moderating temperatures. Low
pressure will approach and pass south of the region later
tonight into Friday with a chance of very light rain and snow to
far southern counties, while northern counties remain dry. A
nice day returns for Saturday before chances of light
precipitation return for Sunday.
&&
.NEAR TERM /THROUGH FRIDAY/...
As of 300 AM EDT Thursday...A much nicer day will unfold across
our area today as a narrow nw-se oriented ridge axis builds
overhead. Mainly sunny skies are expected under modest west to
northwest winds of 6 to 12 mph, occasionally gusty in eastern
counties through mid-afternoon. Highs will remain seasonably
cool, but will moderate considerably over yesterday's unpleasant
readings - mainly mid 40s to lower 50s.
For tonight into Friday we continue to monitor low pressure taking
shape across the MS/TN Valley region and tracking ene through the
northern Mid-Atlantic and off the southern New England coast. Models
have largely converged on this solution, keeping steadier
precipitation mainly south of our forecast area with only some very
light rain and/or snow across Rutland/Windsor counties late tonight
through early afternoon on Friday. This appears reasonable given the
a relative lack of deep layer forcing and fairly dry lower levels.
Precipitation amounts should generally average a tenth of an inch or
less in these areas with perhaps a dusting to half inch of snow at
elevation should wet bulbing processes evolve as expected. Further
north dry weather should continue under broken mid to high level
cloud cover with some filtered sun toward the international border.
Once again, went well above MOS-based guidance for lows tonight with
expected increasing mid to high cloud cover - mainly mid 20s to
lower 30s (slightly lower far northeast). Highs on Friday coolest
south with thicker clouds and occnl light pcpn - mainly 40s, while
northern areas top out in the upper 40s to lower 50s. Winds
light.
&&
.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
As of 307 AM EDT Thursday...Another cool evening Friday with
weak cold air advection from light northerly flow. Skies
gradually clearing with lows forecast to drop near freezing to
the mid 20s. Shortwave ridge develops for Saturday with light
northerly winds becoming light and more terrain driven. Clear
skies, low RH, and lack of widespread greenery should allow
temperatures to warm into the mid to upper 50s. Clouds
increasing during the evening ahead of the next system. A
beautiful day.
&&
.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
As of 307 AM EDT Thursday... After the beautiful and simple
Saturday forecast, the forecast becomes more complex for the
rest of the weekend and into early next week. The challenge lies
in two interacting shortwaves in the Ohio River Valley and the
scale of upstream blocking as a broad 1028mb surface high noses
down into James Bay in Canada. A closed 500mb low or at least a
sharp upper trough, will then make its way into New England.
Impressive Q-vector convergence and a favorable upper jet
configuration should allow this system to gradually decay, even
once it is cut off from Gulf Moisture in occlusion processes.
The rate of decay and the potential transfer of energy offshore
as this low moves towards Lake Erie is giving synoptic guidance
a head scratcher. For what it's worth, the GFS ensemble forecast
all depict this compact low as it makes its way to Lake Erie,
but how things play out thereafter are a bit unclear. Run-to-run
consistency is not there at this time, and there are some hints
that this system could run a similar course to the one forecast
to impact the region this Friday.
Precipitation looks most likely for the southern half of our
forecast zone, so that is where the highest PoPs will be for Sunday
as the system lifts northeast towards the Northeastern US. For
Monday, a reinforcing upper shortwave and some wrap around moisture
from the offshore surface low could keep rain chances going well
into the day before clearing out later during the evening. Mostly
dry for Tuesday, then another system arrives either late next
Wednesday or Thursday. Temperatures continue to remain near to below
seasonal norms while we remain under the influence of the longwave
trough stubbornly set up across the Eastern US. The EC is trying to
offer some hope with a more amplified wave pattern that might give
us a shot at some more spring-like conditions.
&&
.AVIATION /07Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
Through 06Z Friday...VFR/quiet wx through the forecast period
under high pressure. Clear skies with winds light to modest
mainly west to northwesterly through 00Z under SKC, occnly
gusty to 20 kt at KMPV. After 00Z winds trend light and vrb with
some increase in high cloud cover toward the end of the
forecast cycle.
