Yes, parking there at first appears to be in violation of all LNT principles, but it is indeed a maintained/sanctioned/approved place to park. (And I just noticed a typo in what I wrote previously: walk South as you correctly stated to reach the top of the NE Snowfield, not North as I incorrectly wrote.)
I didn't mark the Ball Crag snowfield on my map, but yes, often some enjoyable snowfields will form in between the NE Snowfield and the furthest extent of the summit snowfields that I marked as the Far NE Snowfield. The vertical gets kind of short over there, but as you found, if the NE Snowfield hasn't had a good season, and if it's being further pounded in submission by all the Otto-assisted skiers, then some lateral exploring up there can be very fun.

Go straight down the trail toward the alpine garden, and soon you reach snow. The short convex snowfield there connects to a much larger longer one to your right, as you face toward the alpine garden. It was much better skiing when I was there than the NE field. Smooth virgin corn, that had not been skied for a while. I was just exploring when I found it.
