Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Burlington VT
406 AM EST Mon Dec 19 2016
.SYNOPSIS...
Strong high pressure will build across the region into Monday
with a brief return to cold temperatures. Temperatures then
begin a warming trend from Tuesday through the rest of the work
week westerly flow brings in a milder airmass. The next chance
of precipitation will be towards the end of the week as occur by
next Thursday as low pressure tracks through the Great Lakes
into the northeast.
&&
.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 353 AM EST Monday...High pressure will continue to build
into the North Country through the day today. Areas overnight
that have cleared out have plummeted as radiational cooling has
dropped much of northern New York into the single digits to
teens below zero. The hourly temps will be a bit of a struggle
through the rest of the overnight hours but I would expect teens
below zero is as low as it gets for SLK and the rest of the
Saint Lawrence valley.
During the day today the high crests over the region and will
gradually begin to slide east. This will lead to cold temps but
sunny skies with light southerly winds. Max temps should warm
into the teens across most locations while staying a bit colder
across northeastern VT. Overnight temps will fall as the sun
goes down but as the high departs to the east we start to get
into some moderate warm air advection so temps will either hold
steady or gradually warm overnight.
&&
.SHORT TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
As of 346 AM EST Monday...High pressure moves east of the area
during the day on Tuesday. No precipitation is expected but a
warming trend will begin as south to southwest flow aloft
increases across the area. Highs should generally be in the 20s
to around 30. We could also see some wind gusts in the 25 to 30
mph range out across the Saint Lawrence Valley and in the
Champlain Valley near Lake Champlain. An upper level trough of
low pressure moves across eastern Canada Tuesday night into
Wednesday and this will enhance the potential for some light
snow or rain showers as temperatures climb into the lower to mid
30s on Wednesday. Not expecting much in the way of
precipitation with amounts less than a tenth of an inch.
&&
.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/...
As of 346 AM EST Monday...No significant weather expected in
the extended period from Wednesday night onward...but there will
be a few systems impacting the region. First is a shortwave
trough moving into the region late Wednesday night into
Thursday. Most of the forcing with this system stays north of
the border and our area stays on the warmer side of this system
with surface low tracking just north of our area. Thus looking
at rain and snow for precipitation. There may be some upslope
precipitation on the backside of this system Thursday night into
Friday with relatively quiet weather Friday night into Saturday
as a weak upper trough passes to our north once again. Looks
like next best chance for more widespread precipitation will
come Christmas Day night into Monday. Looks like another warm
air advection event with snow changing over to rain.
&&
.AVIATION /09Z Monday THROUGH Friday/...
Through 06Z Tuesday...Expecting skies to gradually clear
overnight, as a ridge of high pressure builds east from the
Great Lakes. Expecting mainly VFR conditions through the period
as the high pressure area crests over the region on Monday.
Outlook 06z Tuesday through Friday...
06Z Tuesday to 12Z Thursday...Generally VFR. A few mountain
snow showers possible Wednesday with brief intervals of MVFR
possible, mainly at KSLK.
12Z Thursday to 12Z Friday...Becoming MVFR/IFR in light rain or
snow showers.
12Z Friday onward...trending VFR with high pressure.
