Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Burlington VT
257 AM EDT Sat Sep 29 2018
.SYNOPSIS...
A weakening cold front will bring cloudy skies and light rain
showers to northern New York and far northwestern Vermont early
this morning before dissipating across the region during the
daylight hours. Increasing sunshine is expected during the late
morning through the afternoon hours. High pressure building
eastward from the Great Lakes will bring generally fair
conditions through Sunday with near seasonable temperatures for
late September.
&&
.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SUNDAY/...
As of 245 AM EDT Saturday...Still dealing with modest cold front
with sfc bndry extending from near Jay Peak swwd thru BTV and
into the nrn Adirondacks at 0630Z. Anafrontal structure noted
with all precipitation north and west of the sfc front position.
Ongoing light rain in the frontal zone is being aided by
favorable jet dynamics with 100+kt mean 500-300mb flow moving
downstream of mean upper trough position across the Great Lakes,
with left exit region across the St. Lawrence Valley early this
morning. Once this mesoscale forcing exits, appears front will
gradually wash out across central VT and the Adirondack region
with decreasing coverage of showers by 12-14Z. Remainder of the
day will see gradual clearing with mostly sunny conditions this
afternoon and NW winds 5-10 mph. Daytime highs generally
expected in the low to mid 60s. South of the front, patchy
valley fog across central/ern VT will begin to dissipate after
sunrise with increased PBL mixing.
Quiet weather conditions expected tonight into Sunday. Winds
become light and variable after sunset as as sfc anticyclone
builds across NY and wrn New England by 09Z Sunday. Should see
good radiational cooling conditions with overnight lows mainly
in the upr 30s to lower 40s. Locally near 45F along the shores
of Lake Champlain, and as cold as 33F in the colder spots within
the nrn Adirondacks and far nern VT with some patchy frost
possible. Will also see some radiational/nocturnal fog develop
once again 05-13Z in the typically favored valley locations
Sunday morning. PoPs NIL. High pressure remains in control
during the daylight hrs Sunday while translating into the Gulf
of Maine. Return flow and developing warm front across the ern
Great Lakes will yield increasing mid-upper level clouds across
nrn NY during Sunday afternoon, but anticipate any precipitation
to hold off until after 00Z Monday. High temps on Sunday mainly
upr 50s to mid 60s, with S-SW winds 5-10 mph developing by late
morning/early aftn.
&&
.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/...
As of 253 AM EDT Saturday...Zonal flow and decaying boundaries will
be the trend all week and it begins this period with a leftover
boundary across the area and a decaying wave moving along the
boundary with warm air advection advecting precipitable waters
> 1 inch bringing some showers or light rain late Sunday night
into Monday morning then front shifts south awaiting for another
impulse Monday night-Tuesday.
&&
.LONG TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/...
As of 253 AM EDT Saturday...Zonal flow across the northern tier
of country with SE CONUS ridge trying to make inroads but it's
that time of the year that northern stream has a bit more
influence than the summer. Several weak disturbances in zonal
flow will bring about a chance of showers for the upcoming week
and heights will be rising thus a warmer than normal period as
well.
Another shortwave and weak surface wave on Monday night-Tuesday
for better chance of rain/showers as PWATS approaching 1.5
inches moves closer to southern border. This departs allowing
for some ridging and rising heights for some mild/warm days
Wed/Thu before a cold front from a low well north into
James/Hudson Bays crawls through Thu aftn-Thu ngt. However
given the push of this front is well...well north it appears to
SE ridge will quickly rebuild for Fri.
Temperatures will be AOA seasonable Tuesday onward.
&&
.AVIATION /07Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Through 06Z Sunday...Occasional FG with IFR conditions thru 13Z
at MPV/RUT/SLK. Elsewhere, -SHRA will continue at KMSS, with a
chance of a brief shower at PBG/BTV thru sunrise as cold front
moves sewd into central VT. Generally returning VFR areawide
after 14Z with NW winds 5-10 mph as frontal bndry gradually
dissipates across central or s-central VT later this morning.
VFR thru tonight except for possible LIFR fog at SLK/MPV once
again 05-13Z Sunday.
Outlook...
Sunday: VFR. Patchy BR.
Sunday Night: Mainly VFR, with areas MVFR possible. Chance RA.
Monday: Mainly VFR, with areas MVFR possible. Chance SHRA, Chance
RA.
Monday Night: Mainly MVFR, with local IFR possible. Chance SHRA.
Tuesday: Mainly MVFR, with local IFR possible. Likely SHRA.
Tuesday Night: Mainly MVFR, with areas IFR possible. Chance SHRA.
