Matt,
You have said this before, but as a local Vermonter, I'll bet you are driving
it in the early AM on your way to MRG or S'bush. The first plows come by
sometime after 5 AM (I know, I have slept in the car at the bottom waiting
for them) and they really clear it well.
The App Gap is steep, with several hairpin turns and the highest elevation of
any year round state maintained road in Vermont. When we flatlanders hit it
at midnight after 5 hrs of driving and hours after the last plow has been by,
it is a very difficult pass to ascend without good tires and AWD.

IMnotsoHO, App Gap is one of the best kept roads in the state. They
always seem to post at least two plows on it. If you take it fast on
the way up and slow on the way down, there's no reason why you can't
get up and over it, even in the worst of storms (except perhaps the
Great Ice Storm of '98).
