Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Burlington VT
306 AM EDT Mon May 22 2023

.SYNOPSIS...
Mainly dry weather prevails early this week. A strong cold front
will bring wetting rain Wednesday, followed by cool conditions for
the end of the week. There are a few chances for rain showers late
this week, but no signals of a washout for the weekend. Temperatures
are expected to slowly warm towards seasonal normals over the
weekend.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TUESDAY/...
As of 305 AM EDT Monday...Cool, dry, and light north flow on top of
mid-May sunshine will make for a refreshing day, with high
temperatures in the 60s to a spot 70 in the lower Connecticut River
Valley. There could be a bit of smoke aloft early, but as the cold
front slides further south, it should clear out. Broad high pressure
should favor radiational cooling tonight, and result in 40s across
the valleys and 30s in cold hollows.

For Tuesday, mainly dry weather will continue. Broad surface high
pressure will shift offshore, but with a weak upper level trough
shifting through the region. Temperatures will warm nicely into the
70s. So, we have marginal heating and a weak boundary. Moisture will
be lacking from the ingredient list, and the mid-level high will
result in some poorer lapse rates aloft. Based on high res guidance,
there could be a few showers along the eastern slopes of the
Adirondacks, likely based on the interaction of the lake breeze and
topography. So have maintained a slight chance of showers for the
far eastern Adirondacks and the southern Greens.

&&

.SHORT TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/...
As of 305 AM EDT Monday...Things look on track for a pattern change
during the short term period as an upper trough swings through
southern Canada and a potent cold front crosses our region. South
flow ahead of the approaching front will allow Tuesday night to be
relatively mild compared to previous nights; lows will be in the mid
40s to mid 50s. The cold front will lie poised to move into the St
Lawrence Valley by daybreak Wednesday and should make a fairly quick
push southeastward through the daylight hours. There's good moisture
convergence along the front and ample forcing as the upper trough
swings overhead, becoming negatively tilted and eventually forming a
cutoff low, so expect a broad swath of showers to move across the
region. There will be some instability out ahead of the front, with
MU CAPE approaching 600 J/kg in places. However, the bulk of the
precipitation should be behind the front, where it will be more
stable. But if any showers do develop ahead of the front, there
could be a rumble of thunder or two. Temperatures will fall sharply
behind the front, so expect daytime highs will be early, with
cooling to occur during the mid/late afternoon hours. Northern areas
will only warm into the lower 60s before the front moves through,
but most areas should approach 70F. Showers will persist into
Wednesday night as an upper low closes off just north of the
international border. It'll be a chilly night behind the cold front
as well, with lows dropping into the mid 30s to mid 40s. Higher
elevations could well see some snow mix in with any lingering rain
showers.

&&

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
As of 305 AM EDT Monday...Model guidance continues to struggle with
the upper low and its evolution. The 00z GFS now the most
progressive, kicking it eastward to near the Gaspe Peninsula by
Thursday morning and eventually into the Maritimes by Friday
morning. Meanwhile, the CMC and ECMWF keep the low pinwheeling over
southern Quebec/northern New England until at Friday. It is here
that the CMC and ECMWF solutions diverge, the former moving the low
on out to the east, while the latter keeps it around our area until
the weekend. Given these trends, have stayed close to the NBM for
the long term, especially from Thursday night onward. Thursday will
likely be cool and showery, especially in northern areas, and this
pattern could continue right into the weekend, especially if the
slower CMC solution holds true. However, if the faster GFS is right,
then we'd see dry weather once again take hold for the upcoming
holiday weekend. Stay tuned.

&&

.AVIATION /07Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Through 06Z Tuesday...Main impacts to terminals will be over the
next 4 to 6 hours with patchy fog near KSLK and KRUT of 0.5 to 3
mile visibility, with chances diminishing as a front continues
sliding south. So after 10z, expecting mostly clear skies and
with light, but steady 4 to 8 knot north winds. After 00z
Tuesday, winds will calm.

Outlook...

Tuesday: VFR. NO SIG WX.
Tuesday Night: VFR. NO SIG WX.
Wednesday: Mainly VFR, with areas MVFR possible. Likely SHRA,
Slight chance TSRA.
Wednesday Night: Mainly VFR, with local MVFR possible. Chance
SHRA.
Thursday: VFR. Slight chance SHRA.
Thursday Night: VFR. NO SIG WX.
Friday: VFR. NO SIG WX.
