presence, bernie's 3/7

white is supposed to be the presence
of all color--it all comes from light--
and then the sun submerged into
the adirondaks leaving the purple after-
burn set off by strands of cumulus (white).

the snow had been worked by the wind
into miniature dunes. each kick-step
sent white puffs out onto the shadowed
surface. a coyote run bisects the meadow,

and they seem as present, even in their
absence, the dark track set off against
the frozen light. dan had been hanging out

with bernie, and was headed back up
to his house when i slid down to the road.

"that looked like a good run." a master-
piece of understatement. there could be
no more to come, and this one set of tracks
extending back up the hill would remain

for now, the present, time carved into light.
