Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Burlington VT
629 AM EDT Thu Jul 7 2022
.SYNOPSIS...
Today will be another pleasant day with partly sunny skies and
near normal highs. Our next weak system approaches on Thursday
night into Friday with just some isolated showers. Following
that, we'll have another beautiful weekend with warm days and
cool nights.
&&
.NEAR TERM /THROUGH FRIDAY/...
As of 623 AM EDT Thursday...No significant changes made with
this update. Patchy fog still being reported along many of the
major river valleys this morning, but it should start to
dissipate as we continue to see increasing sunshine. Cloud cover
is a bit more extensive over Rutland and Windsor Counties than
previously anticipated, so have updated sky cover to match the
latest satellite trends. Otherwise the forecast is in good
shape.
Previous discussion...High pressure will remain draped
over the North Country today, leading to a pleasant summer day.
Fair weather cumulus will bubble up this afternoon, especially
over the higher terrain, but no rain is expected. Highs will top
out in the mid 70s to around 80.
Our next system approaches late tonight into Friday as a weak
surface low and its associated front will drift eastward across
Ontario and Quebec. Flow turns southward overnight ahead of this
feature, keeping overnight temperatures 5-10 degrees warmer
than the previous night. A few light showers/sprinkles will be
possible, but overall don't expect much more than just
increasing clouds. The front will make its way over the
international border on Friday, weakening as it pushes
southward. Moisture and forcing with this boundary are minimal,
but isolated showers will be possible, mainly across our
northern tier of counties. Any showers that do develop will be
light with only a few hundredths of precipitation expected.
Highs will range from the mid 70s in the mountains to the lower
80s in the Champlain and Connecticut Valleys.
&&
.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/...
As of 330 AM EDT Thursday...Drier air will work into the region
on Friday night into Saturday with gradually clearing skies
after some initial cloudiness Friday night. After minimum
temperatures bottom out in the 40s to lower 50s, highs on
Saturday will reach the upper 60s to mid 70s. Have gone with
drier guidance for dewpoints on Saturday with a dry air mass in
place and models indicating a deep mixed layer.
&&
.LONG TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
As of 345 AM EDT Thursday...The extended portion of the
forecast will start off dry and with below normal temperatures,
then trend warmer and more active headed into next week. Large
area of surface high pressure ridges into our area from Canada
and passes over the northeast through the weekend. Saturday will
be the cooler of the two days, with both days only seeing highs
reach the 70s. Saturday night will also be quite cool, with
lows dipping into the 40s across the higher elevations of
Northern New York and Vermont. By Monday the surface high will
slide eastward and our region will be under southwesterly flow,
leading to a warmer and more humid day than recent days. Highs
will reach the mid 80s in the Champlain valley. Next system will
cross our region on Tuesday and have showers likely with a
chance of thunderstorms mentioned with expected surface based
instability associated with the frontal passage. Looking further
out, another system will potentially bring additional showers
to the region Thursday night into Friday. Still lots of details
unclear but as we make our way into next week will have a better
idea of timing and strength of potential thunderstorms Tuesday.
&&
.AVIATION /12Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
Through 06Z Friday...Except for IFR/LIFR in patchy fog through
12z this morning, VFR will prevail at all terminals through the
TAF period. Have already seen some brief IFR at KMSS and KSLK
this morning, and expect those two sites, as well as KMPV and
KEFK, will see periods of IFR/LIFR in fog, especially 08z-12z.
Otherwise, scattered fair weather cumulus will develop after
15z, especially over higher terrain terminals. Light and
variable winds early this morning will remain mainly terrain
driven through 14z, then turning more to the west/southwest at
5-10 kt through sunset; light and variable thereafter.
Outlook...
Friday: VFR. Isolated SHRA.
Friday Night: VFR. NO SIG WX.
Saturday: VFR. NO SIG WX.
Saturday Night: VFR. NO SIG WX.
Sunday: VFR. NO SIG WX.
Sunday Night: VFR. NO SIG WX.
Monday: VFR. NO SIG WX.
