Good afternoon,

In the US, there are two premier organizations that promote development and collaboration for research administrators: The National Council of University Research Administrators (NCURA) and Society of Research Administrators (SRA) International. Both have international components, but NCURA tends to primarily focus on topics pertaining to research administration by the US institutions and as they relate to US sponsors.

The National Council of University Research Administrators (NCURA) was initiated in 1958 to aid in the evolution of the profession of Research Administration from that of a part-time job performed by persons with other primary duties into that of a full-time profession with specific requirements.

SPA Team Leads and I have been NCURA members for the past few years and have been utilizing NCURA resources as an integral part of our procedure work and education efforts in the past two years. Below is the information this year’s SPA EDU seminars have included under “additional resources available:”
_______________________
The National Council of University Research Administrators (NCURA) strives to make advances in the field of research administration through professional development, the sharing of knowledge, and by fostering a sense of community via multiple venues:

https://onlinelearning.ncura.edu/ Tutorials, on-line publications, magazine, industry news are available to NCURA members

http://www.ncura.edu/travelingworkshops/Home.aspx These workshops are taught by experienced leaders in the areas of compliance, department research administration, global research management, post-award administration and pre-award administration; the expertise depends on the workshop.

https://onlinelearning.ncura.edu/free-resources Education available to the public at no cost, NCURA membership is not required
_______________________

In addition, NCURA organizes annual regional and national conferences (meetings). In February, I shared that NCURA Region I meeting will take place at the end of April with participation offered to members and nonmembers. Participation in regional meetings tend to be about 50% research administrators from central offices / 50% from departments and colleges supporting grants. It is a multi-day event, with concurrent sessions, discussion groups, and breakfast round tables intended to facilitate knowledge sharing among New England institutions and from federal sponsors, as well as valuable networking opportunities.

I am particularly excited about this year’s regional meeting because, as a volunteer regional board member, I am helping to organize it. Julie Macy and I are also presenting a concurrent session. You can learn more by visiting the links below. I would be very happy to answer any questions about NCURA in general and the spring meeting in particular.
