I hope you all consider what we must do to care for our patients, and what we can do better. Then the coming year will be so much better. And we can make it so. An unbridled optimist, I know we will. I would humbly suggest we all learn Spanish, since that is the language of so many of our patients.
Start with " Donde esta delor?" "Where does it hurt?" This has helped me significantly, as they point to the place on which I need to focus. And the fact that I "spoke their language" means we have established rapport. When it comes to patients, rapport is a major accomplishment. Pretty easy to ask, just pronounce it as written, they will point you to the source of their problem, every time. I guarantee it, money back if you are not satisfied. What you got to loose?
If you have paid any interest in the recent reports of our last Census, you might understand why this is important. If not, you still might understand. We are a Nation of immigrants, unlike most other nations. We should and must accept this. This is not a rant, this is a reality . Yes, I know some Spanish, but I have much to learn, and my patients are incredibly willing teachers. Patients have taught me so much, I can never underestimate them. Not just Spanish, but so much about their condition. Which, I submit, is why, the essence of why, they were sent to us.
