Actually, the Medicare Improvements for Patients and Provider Act (MIPPA) requires accreditation for advanced imaging modalities (CT, MR, PET) in order for the provider to be reimbursed through Medicare. This does NOT include ultrasound at this point. This requires accreditation by 2012.

The CARE Bill (Consistency, Accuracy, Responsibility, and Excellence in Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy Bill) is in Congress again (11 years in a row?) and will probably not pass this year due to partisan bickering. The CARE bill will require credentialing/licensure of the person providing the service, and this does include ultrasound.

ICAVL will require credentialing of all Technical Staff by 2017.

The American Board of Surgery will require any physician who is applying for the Vascular Surgery Boards to have the RPVI credential by 2014.
