Pair of Catamounts Named AWHCA National Scholar Athletes

BURLINGTON, Vt. - Junior Kami Cote (Copperton, Utah) and sophomore
Abbey Kaknes (St. Charles, Ill.) have been selected as National
Scholar Athletes by the American Women's Hockey Coaches Association.

To qualify for the elite squad, student-athletes must have completed
at least one academic year, have a cumulative grade-point average of
3.50 or higher, and have played in at least half of the team's games
during the 2003-04 season.

Cote, a goaltender, was selected to the All-ECAC honorable mention
team, becoming the first Catamount to earn All-ECAC honors in
Vermont's Division I era. She led the nation in saves (1,332) and
ranked 10th overall among the national leaders in save percentage
(.927). She set a new single-game school record with 66 saves in
Vermont's 2-0 loss at #6 Wisconsin in the season opener. She also
set new UVM single-season marks in saves (1,332), minutes played
(1990:57) and games played (34).

Cote, who is making her second straight appearance as an AWHCA
National Scholar Athlete, represented the University of Vermont at
the 2004 NCAA Leadership Conference that was held May 30-June 3 at
Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex and Coronado Springs Resort in
Lake Buena Vista, Florida.

Kaknes, a forward, played in all 34 games this season. She tallied
five points on one goal and four assists. She enters her junior
season having played in 64 straight games in her career.

Cote owns a 3.69 GPA as a physical education major, while Kaknes
posted a 3.65 GPA as an elementary education major at Vermont. Both
student-athletes also earned spots on the ECAC Academic Honor Roll
for the 2003-04 season.

Vermont finished the season, its third at the Division I level, with
an overall record of 6-25-3. The Catamounts posted the most
victories (6) and most ECAC points (5) in the Division I era. UVM
earned its first-ever ECAC victories with a sweep of Union at
Gutterson Fieldhouse.
