A flock of about 64 snow buntings was observed Jan 03, 2021 at 3 pm in Volunteers Green Park, in Richmond, VT. Birds spotted circling over a patch of bare ground just off parking lot/kiddie playground. Observed for about 20 minutes, during which they repeatedly took flight at the slightest provocation, circling in the air, sometimes breaking into two flocks, usually returning to nearly the same spot on the ground, on one occasion briefly landing in tops of nearby mature hardwoods to allow a family group (of humans) to pass by. Their frenetic feeding habits were a joy to observe, as they tumbled over one another, and their cheerful twittering was music to my ears on a serene winter day.
