Machias Seal Island hosts colonies of thousands of Atlantic puffins and
common murres, along with smaller numbers of terms and other waterfowl. The
puffins and murres come ashore only to nest and raise their young. Seals are
also frequent visitors to the Island.

Join the Quechee Camera Club on Tuesday, March 12 at 6:30 at the Quechee
Club as photographer Ian Clark takes us on a journey to visit the Island
with his travelogue 'Puffin Stuff.' Ian has visited the Island four times,
taking over 12,000 photos of the wildlife. He'll present views of most of
the species of birds and mammals found on the island and share information
how you can visit the Island. Admission is free and everyone is welcome. 

Atlantic puffins, also known as 'clowns of the sea' are true seabirds - they
live at sea and come ashore only to nest. They nest in burrows on islands on
both sides of the North Atlantic. They were once widely hunted but in recent
years their population has increased and they are extending their range
further south down the coast of Maine. 


Ian spent many years operating commercial photo labs and tackling technical
photographic problems, including a stint as the Manager of the Photographic
Section at NASA's Langley Research Center. He has a B.S. from the Rochester
Institute of Technology and did his master's work at the S.I. Newhouse
School of Public Communications at Syracuse University. He has been a news
stringer off and on since 1975. For many years, he has traveled extensively
to photograph railroads, focusing on our remaining steam locomotives.
Locally, he's best known for his sports photos in the local papers. In
October 2018, he was accepted as a Juried Member of the League of New
Hampshire Craftsmen.
