Yesterday at Hinesburg Town Forest, Louanne Nielsen, Kaye Danforth and I listened for many minutes to a mystery bird song: a very loud single note followed by a loud descending whirr or whinny. I got within a few yards of the noise without seeing the bird. Suddenly there was a titmouse doing its normal "peter peter" from exactly the same location. We never saw the titmouse making the odd noise, but there's one posting on xenocanto that matches the whirr part of the song. If anyone is curious, go to www.xeno-canto.org, search for Tufted Titmouse, and scroll down the page for catalog number XC29512, listed as "atypical song". None of us had ever heard a titmouse making this type of noise.
