Hi Birders,
I hope everyone participating in a CBC this weekend is having a great
experience, it will be interesting to compare results around the state.

Friday, December 14, was a very "interesting" day for the CBC. Nine teams
of threeor four (30 birders total) spent the day birding the Mad River
Valley,Northfield, and Roxbury. We had seven people participate for the
first time. We ended our day with a wonderful potluck at the home of
Jeannie Elias and Craig Goss.

Warm temperatures, no snow, open water are not our usual CBC conditions.
In general, we found few birds at feeders and usual hotspots, many of the
species we expect to see were missing or low in numbers, butthere were
some intriguing additions to our species list. New birds to our CBC list:
Ring-billed Gull, Belted Kingfisher, and Eastern Bluebird.

Here are the results from CBC: (CW - Count Week birds - those not
seen/heard on actual CBC day, but three days before or three days after
CBC date. FW - Feeder Watcher. Hopefully, the number of species will rise
in the next few days. Possibilities include Snowy Owl - one reported in
the area, Sharp-shinned Hawk, Northern Shrike, Crossbills, Redpolls,
Waxwings). Interesting that the number of species seen on CBC last year
was 39, this year 41. Total number of birds last year - 3598, this year
3053.

For comparison, I've included the number seen last year if dramatically
different than this year.
