I know several people who are very satisfied with the value of their Nikon
Monarchs, though I don't have any repair stories to relate.

As for power, 10x usually has less field of view than the 8x of the same
brand/model, making it just a bit harder to put them on the bird. When I
last shopped for binoculars, my very subjective conclusion was that while
10x made the image slightly larger than 8x, I couldn't convince myself that
I was actually seeing any more detail. I bought the 8x because they were
easier to use and slightly less expensive.

If you wear glasses, pay particular attention to eye relief.
